Moss build-up is one of those things that creeps up slowly. One day a roof still looks fairly tidy, and before long, the tiles on the front and rear are covered with thick patches of moss, lichen and dirt. That was the case at a property in Sawbridgeworth, where the roof needed a full clean to help improve its condition and stop loose moss from falling into the gutters.
How We Cleaned the Roof
The roof had heavy moss across the front and rear slopes. To clear it properly, we used a combination of scrapers, a wire brush and a stiff broom. We never use pressure washing on roof tiles, as hand-cleaning protects the surface and avoids unnecessary wear. Each section was worked on by hand, removing as much moss as possible without causing any harm to the tiles.

Once the bulk of the moss was removed, the roof was brushed clean so the tiles were left tidy and free from loose debris. This method is suitable for most concrete and fibre cement tiles found across Essex and Hertfordshire, including areas such as Sawbridgeworth, Harlow and Bishops Stortford.
Small Repair While on Site
While we were working on the rear roof, we spotted that the flashing around the soil stack needed attention. We carried out a small repair to secure it properly, avoiding future issues with water getting in around that area.

Waste Removal and Clean Finish
All moss and debris were collected and taken away once the clean was complete. The gutters and surrounding area were left tidy, with no loose moss left behind.
Roof cleaning is a good way to help keep a roofline system working well, especially when paired with regular checks on fascia, soffits and guttering. It also helps keep the space ready for future work such as uPVC fascia replacement, soffit upgrades or roofline repairs, which we often carry out across Essex and Hertfordshire.
