How to Spot a Dodgy Trader and Avoid Being Ripped Off

It feels like we’re coming across more cases lately where people have been stung by rogue traders. We’ve had a few jobs recently where the homeowner has called us in to fix work that’s either been done badly or wasn’t needed in the first place. In some cases, they’ve been talked into having thousands of pounds’ worth of extra work done, usually on the spot and under pressure.

It’s frustrating to see because this stuff can be avoided. So here’s a reminder of what to watch out for when getting work done on your roofline, and how to avoid falling into the trap.

If It Feels Pushy, Walk Away

One of the biggest red flags is being put on the spot to make a quick decision. You should never feel pressured to agree to any work there and then, no matter how convincing they sound.

Some of these traders are very good at making the job sound urgent or serious. They might say things like:

  • “It’s dangerous if you leave it.”

  • “I’m only in the area today, so I can do you a deal.”

  • “We’ve found more problems than we first thought, best to get it sorted while we’re here.”

If anyone tries to push you into agreeing straight away, just say:

“Thanks, but I want to get another opinion before making a decision.”

That’s a perfectly reasonable response and if the trader starts backtracking or getting funny about it, you’ve got your answer.

Always Get a Written Quote

A good company will always give you a proper, written quote that clearly sets out what’s included in the price. It should tell you:

  • What work is being done

  • What materials are being used

  • The total cost

  • How long the job will take

This way, you’re not being caught out by extra costs, vague add-ons, or mysterious ‘problems’ that suddenly appear mid-job.

We hear too many stories where someone agrees to work based on a vague chat on the doorstep or a scribble on the back of a business card. That’s not how it should be done.

Don’t Be Afraid to Get a Second Quote

If a price seems steep or you’re not sure if all the work is really needed, get a second opinion. At SM Roofline, we’ll always come and take a look and give you a free, no-obligation quote. There’s no pressure, just honest advice and a clear price.

Check Reviews First

Before agreeing to any work, check the company’s reviews. Look them up on places like Checkatrade or Google. A decent business will have a trail of happy customers and plenty of feedback to show they’re reliable.

If you can’t find any reviews or there are only a couple that don’t sound right, that’s another red flag.

Things to Remember:

  • Don’t agree to anything on the spot

  • Get a proper written quote

  • Check the company’s reviews

  • Get a second opinion if something feels off

We’re always happy to give a free quote and some straight-up advice. If something doesn’t sound right, give us a call and we’ll tell you if it’s reasonable or if you’re being taken for a ride.
