Concrete guttering was once a popular choice on homes built in the 1950s and 60s, but if it’s still in place today, chances are it’s starting to show its age. Cracks, leaks, and water damage can creep in over time, which is why many choose to replace it altogether. But what if the concrete gutters themselves are still structurally sound?
There is another option – repairing and waterproofing them, giving the guttering a new lease of life without the need for a full replacement. That’s where our concrete gutter repair service comes in.
How We Repair Concrete Guttering
When it comes to concrete gutters, a quick fix isn’t going to do the job. So we take it back to the bones to make sure everything is watertight and built to last.
Here’s how we do it:
Remove the Old Lining and Membranes
The first step is getting rid of anything that’s already been added to try and fix the problem in the past. Old linings, membranes or coatings all need to come out so we can get to the concrete underneath.
Fill the Cracks
Once the surface is clear, we fill any cracks or gaps in the concrete. This is important to stop water sneaking through weak spots that could cause damp inside the house or damage to the walls.
Apply a Concrete Primer
Next up is a concrete primer, which helps the next stages properly stick to the surface. It preps the concrete so the fibreglass has a strong, reliable base to bond with.
Fit the Fibreglass Sheets with Resin
We then fit fibreglass sheets across the whole length of the guttering. These are mixed with a resin that, once hardened, creates a completely waterproof barrier. It lines the entire gutter, sealing the concrete underneath and stopping water from penetrating through.
Finish with a Top Coat Resin
Once the fibreglass layer has fully hardened, we finish it off with a top coat resin. This adds an extra seal over the whole gutter, making it even more resistant to water and weather damage.
Once the work’s complete, the gutters won’t just be watertight – they’ll also be tougher and more durable, extending the life of the original concrete.
Why Repair Instead of Replace?
There are a few reasons why people choose to repair and waterproof concrete gutters rather than replace them:
- The concrete is still strong, with just a few cracks or leaks
- It can be more cost-effective than a full replacement
- Preserves the original look of the house
We’ll always give honest advice on what’s best for the property and the budget. We can provide a range of options when quoting, so it’s easier to pick the solution that suits you best.
